THE BUSINESS IS THE MISSION?

By Robert McArthur

The Year: 1758

The Month: April

The Situation: Sending thirty cash strapped Moravian Missionaries to Suriname

Additional Requirements: a shipment of stripped linen; and one Moravian, Jonas Paul Weiss, to do some hard thinking on economic activities in missions, articulate and pioneer this way of doing missions.

Long Term Results: Over two centuries of successful missionary commerce.

The Story: For the experienced businessman, Weiss, business offered as many opportunities for Christian witness as for profit.[1] His business brain and passionate missionary heart thus laid the foundation for what is now two centuries of missionary commerce.

Standing at the Crossroad of Asia and Europe

Europe and Asia divide in Ural Mountains

Europe / Asia divide in Ural Mountains

It was a warm September day when I stood with one foot in Europe and the other in Asia in the Ural Mountains near Yekaterinburg. This Siberian city has a long and rich history. It is where both a Russian tragedy and the birth of a modern Russian leader took place. Russia itself covers both Asia and Europe. The formation of Russia was Asian. They had Asian roots and Asian dress. As Russia covered more territory, they began to look west. Tsar Peter the Great decreed they could no longer dress as Asians at the court. They must look European in their dress. Thus began a new era of Russian history.

Do you dread Mondays and whoop for joy on Friday evening? Do you love what you do all week or simply feel frustrated? Some people hate working for others so much they start their own business only to find they now have customers – the ones you work so hard to win – and they are your new bosses.

What’s in a Name?

Posted by / in Blog, Nora's Adventures / No comments yet

Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace…all names of Jesus as recorded in Isaiah 9:6. In Matthew 1:21 an angel appears to Joseph and tells him to name the baby “Jesus.” John records that Jesus himself said he was the great I AM – the ever-living God in the flesh.

What’s in a name? The names of Jesus tell us a lot about him, His ministry, His character how He interacts with us. What about you and me? What about our names? How do people know about us by our name?
